The Opening of Nina Joubert’s Masters exhibition “The constructed Self” takes place tonight, Wednesday 16th May at the Athenaeum in Port Elizabeth from 18.30pm.

The exhibition “The constructed Self” forms part of a masters study “Decoding the notion of a constructed identity within an autobiographical picture narrative”. The autobiographical narrative consists of a multifaceted construction that contains elements of riddles and hints of symbolic meanings. The body of work relies on these metaphoric strategies in order to narrate the autobiographical content of the photograph; events and the like are not unfolded in a chronological fashion.

SOUTH African music legend Johnny Clegg, the face of government’s new cultural heritage strategy, says “finding the hidden story behind” is the key to unwrapping the Eastern Cape’s tapestry of riches.

Clegg was responding to a question during his presentation to media at Tourism Indaba 2012 in Durban, yesterday.

“The Eastern Cape has a very rich history that includes, for instance, your eight frontier wars … [from 1779 to 1879 between the Xhosa, and the Boer and British settlers] and the great cattle killing [by the Xhosa]. [triggered by the prophesy of Nongqwuse in 1856 and which resulted in over more than 300000 cattle being slaughtered by the Xhosa]

“This has resulted in strong beliefs and world views. It’s a wonderful tapestry and what you need to do is put together a narrative that tells this story.”

Talking more broadly, Clegg said “the longing to redefine ourselves” was the driver behind the phenomenon of cultural tourism.
“All of us feel at some point like we’re in a porridge. So we become cultural tourists, we go abroad to redefine ourselves.
“When these guys come here – we can give them that gift.”

Clegg, who is also a qualified anthropologist, said a simple meal cooked and presented in a South African way, a mat with a particular weave, can become much more when they are part of a story.

“It’s the hidden story, the story behind – not the artefact itself.
“Most cultural tourists are on a quest and if they are not, then you must construct the quest for them, and put it on the table.”
He said cultural tourists wereare “looking for a new shape”.
“If you flash on that, you will change that person’s life forever, and connect him or her to South Africa forever.

“We need research and money to support this initiative by the government, but I think it is the right way to go, and it has great potential in terms of showing the real South Africa to our tourists,” Clegg said.

Led Zeppelin and ACDC will come under the spotlight next week as Centrestage embarks on a mini-tour to pay tribute to the juggernauts of the rock genre, with performances scheduled at Old Grey in PE on 16 and 17 May, Buccaneers in East London on 18th May and Potter’s Place in Jeffries Bay on 19th May.

Entitled Stairway to Heaven…Highway to Hell, this tour has particular sentimental value, as it sees the group being reunited with their original bassist for the Centrestage All-Star Band and Kickass Guitar Shows, Mike McAuley, who moved to Cape Town at the beginning of 2011.

Also coming in from Cape Town is the legendary vocalist Deon Du Toit, whose searing vocal abilities puts him into a very small group of performers in the world who can emphatically emulate the then youthful ACDC’s Brian Johnson and Zeppelin’s Robert Plant by singing their songs in their original keys without having the band drop them to a lower register!

This is the first time that Centrestage will pay tribute to Led Zeppelin – however the ACDC segment will consist of highlights from their enormously popular ACDC tribute which they performed last year.

The guitar pyrotechnics will be provided by the extraordinary Jens Koudele who originates from Germany, where he learned his dynamic interactive guitar skills copying the showmanship of ACDC guitarist Angus Young whilst performing as a member of one of Europe’s top ACDC tribute bands.

The role of ACDC’s Bon Scott is once again played by Wayne Kallis – and livewire comedian Gino Fabbri completes the lineup on drums.

Popular Led Zeppelin classics will include the likes of Black Dog, Whole Lotta Love, Kashmir and Dazed and Confused, whilst ACDC fans can look forward to Whole Lotta Rosie, Back in Black, Stiff Upper Lip, You Shook me all night long and Thunderstruck, to name a few!

Tickets for the PE run on Wed 16 and Thurs 17 May (starts 19h30) cost R110 and can be purchased through Computicket, tickets for the East London performance at Buccaneers (starts 20h00) are limited to a maximum of 300 and can be purchased through the Guild Theatre at R95 on 043-7430704. Tickets for the Potters Place show (starts 20h00) can be bought through Potters Place at R110 by calling 042-2932500.
