The 2010 Soccer World Cup in The Friendly City
Ever since it was announced that South Africa would be the first African country to host the FIFA Soccer World Cup, the country has been buzzing with activity: upgrading accommodation, improving roads, and of course building state-of-the-art soccer stadiums. Soon, however, all the preparation will be complete, and the actual event will take place. That’s right: it’s almost time for the 2010 Soccer World Cup!
Tickets are already on sale to watch the highly anticipated World Cup games at the upgraded or newly built soccer stadiums, and according to Soccer World Cup Africa, fans must hurry hurry hurry to get tickets for to the soccer games hosted on home-soil. Host cities include Port Elizabeth, Bloemfontein, Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, Nelspruit, Rustenburg, Polokwane and Pretoria.
Incredibly, the 2010 Soccer World Cup will be viewed by an estimated 6 billion people worldwide, and bring hundreds of thousands of visitors to South Africa during June and July 2010. In Port Elizabeth, fans of soccer teams from South Korea and Greece should buy tickets for the 11th of June, while Germany and Serbia kick off on the 18th of June, and Slovenia and England on 23 June. Also at the Nelson Mandela Stadium, the Ivory Coast will play against Portugal on 15 June, Chile against Switzerland on the 21st, while the ¾ playoffs will take place at Port Elizabeth’s soccer stadium on 10 July 2010.
Everyone will be able to participate in the World Cup. Schools will close two days prior to the first soccer game and only open again two days after the finals. This will also assist with road-congestion and possible absenteeism in classrooms, and also ensure that young South Africans have the opportunity to go to a soccer stadium and watch the once-in-a-lifetime games.
In short, it’s going to be bigger that anything we’ve ever seen! So make sure that you are ready, Port Elizabethans and visitors to the Friendly City, it’s almost time to blow your Vuvu-Zelas and shout “Laduma!”.
